3 Definitions of Student Engagement

Engagement = Brain Sweat. ~Paula Bevan

By engaged learning, we mean that all student activities involve active cognitive processes such as creating, problem-solving, reasoning, decision-making, and evaluation. In addition, students are intrinsically motivated to learn due to the meaningful nature of the learning environment and activities. ~Engagement Theory, Kearsley and Shneiderman.

Students who are engaged exhibit three characteristics: (1) they are attracted to their work, (2) they persist in their work despite challenges and obstacles, and (3) they take visible delight in accomplishing their work. ~Phil Schlecty
